DILLWYN SMITH
Dillwyn Smith (b. 1958, UK) is a London-based artist celebrated for his innovative use of materials, pigments, color, and light. Fascinated by the manifestations of human energy and sensitivity, Dillwyn earned his BA from Canterbury College of Art and his MA from the Royal College of Art, where he studied under the guidance of John Golding. Over the years, he has developed a unique, experimental approach that often features stitches and stretches of mass-produced nylon fabrics, transforming them into geometric kaleidoscopes that engage the viewer's senses.
Dillwyn’s practice spans painting, drawing, and installations, with recent solo exhibitions including "Light Cages" (VO Curations, 2019), "Teacher’s Pet" (Patrick Heide Contemporary Art, 2018), and "Silvering the Cerebrum" (UCLH, 2015/16), featuring work from his residency at the Queen Square Brain Bank. Internationally, his work has been showcased in exhibitions such as "Salon Oman" (Leighton House Museum, 2014) and "Omani Legends" (Muscat, 2013). Notably, he became the first British artist to present a solo exhibition at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia in 2013.
A founding member of the Delfina Foundation in London, Dillwyn has significantly shaped contemporary art discourse. He also served as a Visiting Artist and Lecturer at The National Gallery, London (2000–2018), and played a key role in the NG27 tribunal, which successfully redefined the worker status for freelance educators in the UK.
